Response on storage facilities
15th February, 2011
What is FRA doing about the inadequate storage facilities?
This follows the Agriculture Ministers’ remarks that Government is concerned with the lack of storage activities, over the weekend.
Response
The Food Reserve Agency is aware of the storage constraints and is making every effort to engage the relevant authorities on the matter so that funds could be mobilized to support construction of additional storage facilities, as well as rehabilitating the existing ones.
In this regard, the Agency has drawn up an investment plan to construct new storage facilities with a total storage capacity of 700,000 metric tons in various parts of the country which have been recording increasing production but with inadequate storage.
In addition, the FRA has leased storage facilities from the private sector and over 200,000 metric tons capacity has been utilised so far.
